To Juice or Not To Juice?

Ok, I'm going to be totally honest with you. For a long time {a very loooooooooong time} I thought juicing was pointless. I thought nature knows best so eating the whole fruit or vegetable the way it's intended to be eaten {a beautiful, juicy fiber-filled package} was the way to go. To me, juicing was simply an acceptable way for celebrities and models to starve themselves and get away with it while looking like healthy role models. I thought it was a reason to overcharge for a fiberless, sugar-laden, albeit all-natural, drink that Americans would be fooled into believing they needed to be healthy when in reality drinking these juices was causing blood sugar crashes and more intense cravings thus contributing to the obesity epidemic. The only time I thought it made sense to juice was if and when it was being used to give the digestive system a break so more energy could be focused on healing in the event of cancer or another taxing, life-threatening illness. And then, I thought it was only beneficial if the juices were all green and fructose free. Boy, was I wrong.

It wasn't until recently that I discovered the benefits of juicing by experimenting on myself. Since juice bars are popping up everywhere and you can even pick up a cold pressed, organic juicy concoction from the local grocery store, I figured this juicing revolution must have staying power for a reason. And with the intense {Super Crazy} thirst brought on by breastfeeding no matter how many times I filled up my 24 fluid ounce Pure Barre Tervis Tumbler coupled with my skin looking drab and older and my hair and nails becoming dry and brittle, I gave in. {The Suja Juice Solution also helped to coax me over to the juicy green side.} So, I hopped in the car, drove down to the nearest raw and organic juice shop and loaded up on a rainbow of 16oz juices... a red one, a yellow one and two green ones. I would drink these throughout the day while eating usual meals and see if it made any difference or if I would simply crash and burn from riding a blood sugar roller coaster all day.

I made sure to follow all the juice rules I know:

  • Only juice on an empty stomach. Since juice is fiber free, it gets absorbed into the body nearly immediately. Drinking it with or after a meal, causes a "traffic jam" and can cause gas and bloating... definitely not what I was going for!
  • Chew your juice: This helps prepare your body for the food and nutrients it is about to receive. Digestion begins in the mouth, so swishing or "chewing" your juice and mixing it with saliva full of digestive enzymes primes the stomach for the next step of the intricate process.
  • Avoid high sugar juices: Without the fiber to slow down digestion, drinking an all fruity juice can cause your blood sugar to spike only to come crashing down bringing more intense sugar cravings with it. No good.

After enjoying a Volcano juice... a refreshing, spicy blend of grapefruit, orange, lemon, grade B maple syrup and cayenne... in the am upon waking, I could NOT believe how filling and satisfying it was. Not to mention energizing... I like this! Then I had my usual breakfast and worked out. Now, for some red juice... beet, granny smith apple, orange, lemon, ginger {I LOOOVE ginger!}. I drank about half and went on with my day and enjoyed a late lunch, as per usual. Then, around 3:30, I had some of one of my green juices... dandelion greens, kale, cucumber, pineapple, coconut water. Then finished the day with dinner and an herbal tea before bed. First, I can not believe how filling those juices were! I could so see myself successfully completing a total juice cleanse... I LOVED it! Secondly, I was NOT thirsty and {shy readers look away :-p} Emma Kate was a happy girl... my milk production was ON FIRE. I drank the rest of my 2 juices plus my other green juice the next day and even my friend commented out of the blue... not knowing that I had been juicing... that I was GLOWing! Whoop whoop! The juicy glow is NOT a myth! I felt good, energized, HAPPIER, and so hydrated!

So, to juice or not to juice? Definitely JUICE!!! Get juicy! Drink it up! Nourish yourself mind, body and spirit. Make sure it's raw, organic and cold pressed... Local is a big plus! Do it yourself... I do now! It's so worth it. I definitely see how life changing it is when you add it into an already healthy diet. Granted, I do not do it that often because I'm not made of money or have loads of spare time. But I do it when I can, and I make myself a priority. Just yesterday, I felt off, head-achey, sooooo tired, no energy and blah. I went into our newest juice shop {holla Clean Juice!} and got a custom green juice {kale, spinach, cucumber, a little pineapple and a little coconut water} made to perfection. Emma and I sipped on it over the course of our walk through the village and when it was all gone, I felt like a normal human being again. Scratch that, I felt awesome. No more headache, no more fatigue, no more stuck in a fog. More ME. I'm so so glad I discovered the benefits of juicing and found out it wasn't all hype or even just a super cool and "healthy" cover for an eating disorder.
