Probiotics and Why You Need the Little Buggers {Like Yesterday}

You probably already know that your body is home to bacteria, both beneficial and not so much. And most of these little creepy guys live in your digestive tract to help things break down and keep them *ahem* moving along. You probably only think of probiotics {translation: "for life"} when you've taken a round of antibiotics and maybe not even then. The thing is, your body constantly needs the bacteria in your gut to be replenished and kept happy due to the daily stresses of our modern world, including flack from your boss, processed foods and environmental toxins. And I'm not talking eat a yogurt and you're done. Nope, it takes a bit more thought than that, but it's so worth it. A happy belly is the key to having a flat belly, more energy, glowing skin and an optimistic disposition.

Fun facts about probiotics:

You have enough probiotics in your body to fill an entire soup can. Mmm mmm good!

  • You have enough in your body to fill a big can of soup -- up to 5lbs worth!
  • Bacteria cells outnumber human cells 10 to 1! Wowza!
  • Our bodies are home to more than 400 different strains!
  • They're responsible for 70% of our immune response... consider them our bodies' first responders!
  • They help to manufacture needed vitamins like B12, K and A!

So, now the question is, how can I replenish my good guys to stay happy, healthy and slim? Well, easy peasy:

  1. Eat an unprocessed, whole foods, clean diet. Wherever you're starting from -- whether you're a regular at the drive thru or a tree-hugging, granola-munching animal lover -- you can begin to clean up your diet. Baby steps create big changes. Start by swapping out your french fries for kale chips or homemade baked sweet potato fries, add more veggies to your sandwich or pizza slice, swap out your usual breakfast with an alkalizing, energy-boosting green smoothie. You can do this! Once you get a taste for fresh, straight-from-nature foods, you'll have no desire to eat that twinkie ever again. True story.
  2. Eat prebiotics. It's important to feed your little friends! They'll just shrivel up, quit working and die if you starve them! Sad day. Prebiotics are simply the indigestible {by you!} carbohydrates of the food you eat that stimulates the growth and maintenance of your good microflora. The best sources of prebiotics come from whole, unprocessed foods, of course! Here are some good ones:
Probiotic supplements like kombucha are a great way to keep your belly happy and healthy!

  • Asparagus
  • Berries
  • Bananas
  • Garlic
  • Cabbage
  • Root vegetables
  • Apples

3. Supplement: Eat fermented foods like kimchi and raw sauerkraut. Drink kombucha, coconut Kevita. Add inner-eco coconut water kefir to your morning smoothie. Take an allergen-free probiotic every morning.

I do all of these things, nearly every day. My morning routine consists of a full glass of room temperature water, probiotic and warm lemon water. Every.Single.Day. Since I started nurturing my belly with the good stuff {probably 3-4 years now}, I've found a happier belly, a flatter belly, clearer skin, increased energy and I seldom ever get sick. If I could recommend just one thing, it would be taking/eating/drinking your probiotics.

Now head over to the food heading on my blog {coming soon!} for a tasty and fun Sparkling Fuzzy Navel Smoothie you and your belly will both love :)
