Frozen Matcha Shake-a-Latte

Achieving your health goals can sometimes feel like all work and no play. Whether you’ve dedicated yourself to completing the latest challenge at your favorite Pure Barre studio, or have simply {albeit, not easily} cleaned up your diet to get the best results, it’s still important to “treat yo’ self” without undoing all of your hard work… I’m looking at you Cupcake Crème Frappuccino!

Stay on your highest tippie toes and embrace the shake longer with this clean and green frozen matcha "shake-a-latte"!

Stay on your highest tippie toes and embrace the shake longer with this clean and green frozen matcha "shake-a-latte"!

That’s where this delicious and energizing smoothie comes into play. It tastes ridiculously creamy and splurge-worthy, without the sugar and fat from your favorite coffee shop blend. Instead I substitute health-promoting ingredients like matcha tea, chia seeds, maca powder and hydrating coconut water to make this glow-inducing sip a nutritional powerhouse you can feel good about. Want to know why? Check it out:

  • Matcha Tea: This trendy superfood is the hottest ticket since kale, and for a good reason. Since the entire tea leaves are ingested, rather than steeped and thrown away like in traditional tea, this bright green powerhouse is super potent containing a hefty dose of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants like polyphenols. These protect against aging and can boost metabolism.
  • Chia Seeds: This ancient power food of the Aztecs is a complete protein that’s also full of fiber, healthy fats and minerals. Did you know chai seeds are capable of absorbing nearly 15 times their weight in water? This makes them incredibly hydrating and filling, providing your body with long-lasting energy.
  • Maca Powder: This root is a nutritionally dense superfood filled with high amounts of B vitamins for a non-caffeinated energy boost.
  • Coconut Water: I consider this “Mother Nature’s Gatorade,” as it replenishes lost electrolytes and offers intense hydration to refuel after a tough workout.

So, when you need a boost of long lasting, slow burning energy that will keep you on your {highest tippie} toes and ready to embrace the shake, whip up this creamy faux Frappuccino… Guaranteed to be your favorite treat that only tastes like a cheat.

This creamy, faux Matcha Frappucino is full of slow, long-burning energy and clean ingredients to power you through your workout.

Directions: Add all the ingredients except chia seeds to your high speed blender. Blend on high for 30 seconds or until well combined and frothy. Add the chia seeds to a glass and top with the blended matcha. Gently stir and enjoy!

*Pumpkin seeds will be hard to grind up in a regular blender so try pumpkin seed butter. If you can't source, replace with raw sunflower seed butter or almond butter.

*For a creamier version, substitute 1 frozen banana for the ice and omit the maple syrup.

*Maca powder comes in many varieties. I prefer the red maca powder as it’s slightly sweeter and milder. It can be purchased online or in health food stores like Whole Foods and Earth Fare.
