If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed that I am now an official 2019 Solluna Ambassador. What does that mean? Well, Solluna is the work of nutritionist, author and celebrity fav Kimberly Snyder (remember her? She’s been monumental in my switch to a happier, healthier plantbased lifestyle. LOVE her) who first popped into my life with The Beauty Detox Solution. If you haven’t purchased this book yet, I urge you too RIGHT NOW. My copy is about 8 years old now and you can tell I use it often. I am always turning to it for more inspiration and quick and healthy recipes to get back on track… including the famous Glowing Green Smoothie. It’s Kimberly’s trademark, and you’re going to love it!
Made from a ton of greens, a bit of fruit, some herbs and filtered water, this smoothie is a beautiful way to set the tone for the rest of the day. It’s so refreshing, zippy and energizing and for me, it’s also helped reduce sweet and caffeine cravings throughout the day. Gentle on the tummy, thanks to proper food combining, this smoothie sets you up for a day of health – for beauty inside and out.
(Foods that make you glow from the inside out due to an abundance of vitamins and minerals)
KALE Abundant in calcium, lutein, iron, fiber and essential Vitamins A, K, and collagen-building Vitamin C. This beauty green also has seven times the beta-carotene of broccoli and ten times more lutein. Full of phytochemicals, it also packs in Vitamin E, which rebuilds beautiful skin.
ROMAINE High in vitamins C and K, this heart-healthy leafy green is also high in cleansing fiber and muscle-loving potassium.
CELERY Celery is loaded with essential minerals and vitamins such as folate, potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C and vitamin K. And, this super veg’s diuretic properties can also help you beat the bloat!
CILANTRO Helps remove toxic heavy metals from the body and might also ease anxiety. Um, yes please!
PINEAPPLE Aids in digestion thanks to its powerful bromelain enzyme and chock full of immunity-boosting vitamin C
APPLE “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” — enough said
BANANA High fiber, great source of potassium and packed with energy-giving carbs. The perfect “fast fruit.”
While the traditional GGS is a perfect grab-and-go breakfast because it can be made the night before and stored in a glass mason jar to take along wherever your morning might take you, I prefer to make the GGS into a thick, creamy bowl on mornings where I have time to slow down. Think a beautiful Sunday creation when the kids are giggling, everyone’s still in their jammies at 10am and the happy sun in shining. Then, I have time to gather the ingredients lovingly and prepare smoothie bowls for everyone – the kids LOVE this smoothie (and it helps to keep them *ahem* regular).
After blending the ingredients up in my beloved Vitamix, I simple scrape the thick and delicious goodness into bowls then allow my kiddos to add whatever toppings they’re up for. Emma Kate is all about a plain bowl. But as for me and Caleb, we want ALL THE THINGS. Think sliced berries, whole blueberries, passionfruit pulp, kiwi and more banana. Pomegranate is also a yummy edition with its delightful crunch.
While adding things like seeds, nut butters, coconut and granola would be considered improper food combining (more on that later) and could result in bloating, its best to gravitate towards beautiful, fresh and in-season fruits for toppings.
Now that I hopefully have your mouth watering, here’s the delicious and light recipe for a Glowing Green Smoothie Bowl you and your whole family will love.
Glowing Green Smoothie Bowl
½ cup filtered water, more as needed to blend
4 cups of organic greens (I like kale, spinach and romaine)
2 stalks organic celery
1 cup organic pineapple, frozen
1 organic pear, cored and cubed
2 organic bananas, frozen
1 lime, juiced
1 handful of cilantro, optional
Add the greens and water to a high-speed blender and blend on high until well combined.
Add rest of ingredients, using the tamper as needed
Blend on high until smooth, creamy and dreamy.
Pour into two bowls.
Add toppings as desired.
I hope you love this thick and beautifying bowl of goodness! It makes a lazy Sunday or a hungry Monday so much nicer. And how about that color?! Eye Candy! As always, please tag me on Instagram @pb_n_julie so we can stay connected xx, Julie
